About Gary and Asta
bay of islands

Following is a list of things to do, at and from Te Ngahere Iti:

- There are Te Ngahere Iti (The Little Forest) bush-walks. Wander around in our 56 acres of re-generating and mostly un-tracked native forest where timber logging in the 1930s saw selected trees removed. However, subsequent owners have ensured that re-growth remained unrestricted. Respectable sized native trees still remain.

- Spend quiet evenings listening for the return of the kiwi. Over the years, possum predation along with marauding stoats and weasels, have meant that the flora and fauna has had a hard time. The kiwis used to roam the area but were no longer here when we arrived. There have been a couple of recent sightings and we are hopeful that we will be regularly hearing them soon.

- Accompany us on a trip around our bait and trap lines as we carry out our regular predator control on the rabbits, hares, possums, stoats and weasels that are detrimental to our native flora and fauna. We are now seeing the benefits of our control programme with the return of many of the birds and the regenerating of the flora.

- Search the southern skies with our 10 inch Dobsonian telescope. Maybe you can teach us a thing or two about the wonders of the crystal clear skies that we see.

- Enjoy simple home cooked meals prepared on our wood-burning stove, or sit around and watch me BBQ a meal of your choice.

- Spend time wandering in our bush, photographing the beauty of our flora and fauna, from tiny native orchids to the young giant kauri that we call our own.

- Spend relaxing winter evenings in front of the wood-burner, discussing ecology , New Zealand customs, and how to set up a self-supporting way of life. Feel comfortable in knowing that you are visiting a continuing eco-friendly, self-supporting lifestyle (we do cheat a little when we boil the kettle on the gas stove). If you prefer, we could even watch a DVD.

- Experience home-cooked meals using seasonal fruit and veggies from our own orchard and garden.

- Take a day visit to Northlands large kauri trees or the Gumdiggers Park where archaeological diggings are unearthing layers of kauri forests, thousands of years old. Experience the chance to walk up an internal spiral staircase cut into a complete single kauri trunk.

- Why not take a day-trip to the world-famous Bay of Islands and complete a relaxing day out amongst the magnificent island waters.

- Be sure to make the spiritual visit to Cape Reinga , the northern-most area of New Zealand. This is where the spirits of the Maori dead depart from this place on their journey to the underworld domain of Hine-nui-te-po, the goddess of death. It is also the point where the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea meet, sometimes giving a magnificent display of turbulence when the differing currents clash.

- Visit us at Te Ngahere Iti and immerse yourselves in the friendly atmosphere of New Zealand culture and learn about the people who have the reputation of being the friendliest in the world.

- If you are keen on outdoor exercise, make yourself at home discussing running or race walking with a world renowned masters race walker who can lay claim to many masters world records.

- Discuss your holiday needs with us before coming and permit us to help you to enjoy the north of New Zealand. Let us act as your guides, should you wish our local knowledge input on your local travels.
